I almost touched it

I was no further than a hands length from the Olympic Gold medal today. Had I known sufficient Russian, I would have asked to get my picture with it.
That’s the challenge for the remainder of my games time. Why did I not think to get my iPhone out and take a photo !!!

Team GB have 6 more judo athletes left to compete. Fingers are still crossed for Chris on Friday who will fight alongside Karina; let’s hope, of the six left, we can get the requisite 2 medals. If not, funding opportunities over the next Olympic cycle will be hard to get.

I managed to watch both finals today from the athlete seating area (pics below). I think the Slovakian team really got into the spirit but the best for me was the Korean win. Superb!

Another rainy day for TeamGB

Gemma was disqualified for a leg grab – now banned in judo to promote a more upright stance. She was fighting a really close contest but I fear she reverted to an old technique which she would have practiced many times over the years.

Things didn’t go much better for Euan either. I missed the action (was sorting out the next contestants) but he was thrown for Ippon (10 point score)

As we approach the quarter final stages for -81kg men and -63kg women, my feet are sending me clear messages about the pain.

I’ve attached a pic of the warm up area earlier this morning.

Oh, and I’ve just been informed that CSR plc are now linking to my blog – bet I get a few hits now 🙂

Olympic Boxing

As you know, I’m here for the judo event. However, in the same building we have Boxing, Table Tennis, Weightlifting, Fencing and Tae-Kwon-Do

Now I’m not completely sure which events are on at the moment but my pass seems to get me in to non judo arenas as well – result

Here’s a pic of the boxing arena late last night

Are you enjoying the experience?

That was the question one Londoner asked me as she waited to cross the road at Barking tube station

Interesting really – I had only been thinking a few minutes ago about trying to get on the volunteer team at Rio and my longer term hopes of refereeing at 2024
Could this woman read minds ???

(I’ve just spilt my coffee on the tube … the bottom of my right leg caught most of it though so London Underground don’t have much to mop up 🙁 )

Today’s Team GB line up consists of Euan Burton and Gemma Howell. I saw Gemma the other day on the warm up mat but not Euan.
I was chatting with Chris Sherrington yesterday though (fighting on Friday). He seems very upbeat about his chances; he’s a really nice guy and I personally hope he does well.

Start of day 4 in about 2.5 hours. Time to get on the train again …. this time, without a coffee

The plan isn’t quite working

Three days in now and, of the six competitors that have so far gone out, we have only won two contests (Colin Oates).

Both Sarah and Danny fought well but Olympic Judo is something else
The sheer number of contests that have gone to golden score is amazing – just shows, there is little to differentiate the players

Got my first bit of memorabilia today – without asking for it I should add. It’s a little drum from the Korean team

Actually, that’s lie….I was given a pen from the French Federation but that doesn’t feel quite as personal 🙂

I got on TV

Just seen myself on the warm up mat

Hope you all saw me too

What day is it?

Hmmm, asked today what day it was and I didn’t have the right answer…
…these days are beginning to mould together

Apologies for not updating yesterday. The plan was to head back, get changed and grab some food. That plan changed when I decided to close my eyes for 5 minutes:- 3.5 hours later I awoke to find 22:30 flashing on the bedside clock….oops

So, what happened yesterday. I’ve told you about Colin but don’t believe I mentioned Sophie’s contest.

Sophie Cox had her first contest early yesterday morning. As with Ashley, she had a bad draw and had to fight the world ranked #2
I saw her later in the afternoon chatting away and, to be honest, she looked fine.
It’s her second Olympics and so I’m not that surprised really

Anyhow, onto today.
Today we have Danny Williams and Sarah Clark.
Danny comes here after a disappointing result at The British Open – he got disqualified which, in this authors opinion, was the wrong decision.

Colin’s day

After two excellent opening fights, the dream for another member of Team GB has ended

🙁

And he goes further

With a Yuko score in the dying seconds, Colin secures his second victory of the day

First GB win

Well done to Colin Oates – the first GB win. The crowd went mad
